Q. I have been doing deadlifts but not getting the lower back development I want. How did the bodybuilders that worked at Vince’s Gym develop those classic lower back muscles?A. Vince Gironda said the best lower back muscle workout was by doing back extension better known as hyperextensions. He suggested you do them like this:
Lay face down on the hyperextension bench with the back of your ankles resting against the pads and the top edge of your pelvic girdle is contact with the edge of the platform.
Put you hands behind your head and lower yourself in a swan dive position (do not hump your back!).
Now SLOWLY raise your head and body back up to until you are back in a straight line with your lower body (parallel to the floor).
Work up to sets of 15 to 20 reps.
Don't forget to also workout your abdominals to keep the muscle strength balanced between you low back and your abs.
